“How much time should I spend on my social media?”
If I had a buck for every time I get asked that question…
Well, you get the idea.
Social media and time are a problematic pairing.
Let’s talk about why!
If you thought that I was going to reply to the opening question with “As much time as you can.” then you’d be wrong.
You’d be wrong because we need time for things like our businesses, our careers, and the rest of our lives.
Even someone like me, who makes his living from social media, doesn’t spend all his time on social media, especially my own.
What matters is quality over quantity.
How do you spend your time on social media is what’s important.
Do you have a plan to add followers?
Do you block out time for meaningful engagement?
Do you set aside time to create your own original content and to curate the content of others?
Do you track your metrics to see if your time spent on social media is producing meaningful results?
See where I’m going here?
Just doing push-ups while you’re on social media will do you know good.
Every moment spent on social media should have a purpose.
(Sorry, sitting at a device and just looking at cute cat pictures doesn’t count here. Nothing against cats!)
Social media can be very seductive and alluring, not to mention time consuming.
Be disciplined in your time on social media.
Use third party tools to assist you and automate wherever you can.
Understand who your community of interest is on social media and make sure you spend your time with them.
Each of us will have a different answer for how much time we can spend on social media.
What’s important is how wisely we spend that time and how productive we are with it.
That’s it for now!
