Why are you on social media?
Sounds like a pretty straight forward question doesn’t it?
However, I’ve noticed just how many people have a complete lack of purpose when they start with social media.
What’s really scary is how many people are using social media for business purposes, or so they think, and have no clue why they’re there.
Let’s talk for a bit about some good reasons for being on social media.
First, the most basic and most important reason to be on social media is to add value!
Your original content as well as the relevant reshared content of others is the best and easiest way to separate yourself from the rest of the herd.
The next good reason to be on social media is to be found by others!
Your customers, your competitors, and your peers (Also known as Subject Matter Experts (SME) ) are all there!
You have to be too!
Another good reason to be on social media is to learn!
You can learn from other SMEs.
You can learn what your competition is up to.
You can learn what new ideas are trending and what old ideas are dying.
It’s all there but you have to go looking for it!
As a bonus, here are a few good reasons why you shouldn’t be on social media.
You shouldn’t be on social media just to be funny unless you’re a professional comedian. (Don’t get me wrong, humor used well is a powerful aid but don’t be the joke of that day club.)
You shouldn’t be on social media to be trivial. (i.e., “I’m at Starbucks where are you?”)
You shouldn’t be on social media to embarrass yourself. (Think twice about posting that supposedly cool picture from your office Holiday party.)
To sum up:
You want to be there on social media.
Woody Allen once said, “Showing up is 80 percent of life .”
He’s right and it it applies to social media as well.
The other 20 percent is being disciplined about it.
Make sure you have a social media program and stick to it!

That’s it for now!
