Don't Forget Your Social Media!

I meet clients, prospective clients, and friends all the time who are doing great things.
They’re working with e-commerce, they’re working on their brands, writing books, starting companies, or looking for new jobs.
All good stuff!
They do at least one of these very well and some are doing two or more at the same time.
But, there’s a catch right?
Yes, there is one. (There always is, isn’t there?)
Let’s discuss that catch now and help you to avoid it yourself!
The catch is that their social media program, if they even have one, is totally disconnected from all this worthwhile activity!
I’m going to get on my soapbox here because I feel very passionate about this.
In today’s world, if you’re not on social media and using it well then you don’t exist!
A couple of examples will support my point.
A client of mine who is an executive recruiter told me that if a candidate isn’t on LinkedIn then he doesn’t bother with them. His reasoning being if he has to do all the work himself that he’d normally do on LinkedIn with a candidate then he passes on the person. He also asks himself why isn’t this person on LinkedIn. To his mind if you’re not on LinkedIn then you don’t exist.
Another example comes from the world of publishing where writers are telling me that publishers want to know what type of following they have on social media before they start getting serious. Some are even asking prospective writers what their Klout score is! (I love those last minutes calls, “What’s a Klout score and how do I improve it overnight?”) (Place Link here.)
Alright, now that I’ve scared everyone, what can be done about this?
There is an answer and I’m going to tell you what it is.
Have a social media program!
A social media program will do the following for you:

  1. Define your goals
  2. Tell you what social media tools you will use to accomplish these goals
  3. Lay out how you will use these tools to accomplish your goals
  4. Show you how to measure your performance against your goals and stay on track

That’s all it is!
Use my eight step approach to get yourself started.
Or, use somebody else’s! (Sorry, you’ll have to find it yourself.)
Just do something!
Otherwise, you’re nowhere today if you don’t integrate social media into your activities.
The keyword is discipline.
A methodical, comprehensive approach will serve you well.
It’s all about planning and execution.
That’s it for now!
Also, never forget to reach out to either ask questions or to ask for help from someone like myself!
In the meantime, thank you for following and reading my blog!
