The question in the title of this article is one that I get a lot from prospects and clients, and I see it discussed frequently online.
In short, I’ll start by saying in reply, “Of course not!”
And, by extension, you shouldn’t keep doing what you’re doing either!
Now, let me tell you why you shouldn’t stop and what you should be doing about it.
First, let’s talk about why you shouldn’t stop.
Social media is here to stay.
There is no going back to the good, old days.
Newspapers are a folding and traditional broadcast mediums are hurting.
Social media is where the action is and will be for the foreseeable future.
Oh and yeah, social media will continue to change and evolve, so you’d better get used to it.

The sweet salad days of social media are over.
In the beginning, anyone could get away with anything on social media and make a reasonable living.
Not any more.
And, I’m sorry to say, it’s only going to get tougher to make a living on social media in the future.
All this being said, as the old saying goes, anything worth doing is worth doing well.
Social media can work for you.
But, you have to approach it in a consistent and disciplined manner.
Here’s how to do that.
What were your original goals on social media?
Do you have a detailed social media approach for each one?
(As opposed to, I think I’ll do a few tweets today.)
Do you track your progress regularly?
Are you experimenting?
Do you try new things and compare the results?
Do you look at your competitors and leading edge users of social media?
(Hint: The latter don’t have to be in your industry!)
Has your approach become old and stale?
(Trust me, your readers will notice!)
How well do you know your ideal customers?
What are their characteristics?
Where are they online?
Are you engaged with them?
How good is your content?
(Another hint: Ask someone you trust and respect for an honest assessment!)
What content works well and what doesn’t?
Do you post frequently?
Finally, do you have a methodology?
In other words, a plan with goals and metrics.
Social media isn’t easy.
Like any discipline, you have to apply yourself and stay current.
Remember, it’s up to you!
