Can You Overdo Social Media?

One important, and often overlooked, aspect of social media is how much is enough?

In other works, can you overdo social media?

And, yes, like any good thing, social media can be carried away to excess!

(I’ll leave it to the philosophers out there to determine why going to excess with good things always seems to be a bad thing.)

So, let’s discuss this!

How can you overdo social media?

There are few tried and true ways to get yourself into trouble, the most common follow.

First, too much time online with social media, no matter how good your content is, is a bad thing.

Lack of personal contact with family, friends, colleagues, and clients is not healthy, and you find yourself with social media becoming your filter on reality.

Next, too much social media can distract you from your business, profession, or career.

Social media is not an end in itself but a means to an end.

Then there’s the risk of you becoming a spammer on social media.

Poor content, posted too frequently to all the wrong people is a telltale sign, no matter what your intentions are.

Finally, getting caught up in all the wrong (as in controversial) topics, engaging in flame wars, and forgetting why you were on social media in the first place.

Get the idea now?

OK, so if you should find yourself slipping into overdoing it on social media, what should you do about it?

For starters, stop doing whatever it is that you’re doing!

Look at others whom you consider to be influencers and thought leaders on social media and see what they’re doing.

Talk with your community on social media and ask them if they value your content, do they share or comment on your content?

Be open and frank with them, and they’ll respond accordingly.

Overdoing it on social media can happen gradually.

It’s a slippery slope and can happen to the best of us at times.

If you catch yourself starting to slide then stop and take action!

That’s it for now!
