For those who know me, I can be a terror to know.
I continually check the LinkedIn profiles of my friends and colleagues and offer my unsolicited advice on them especially when they’re incomplete.
I freely admit that I’m on a mission to make the world a better place one LinkedIn profile at a time.
(Yes, I’m that boring guy at your cocktail parties.)
But seriously, in today’s competitive job market, if you don’t have a complete LinkedIn profile then you just don’t exist.
Let’s talk about this!
Why do you need a complete LinkedIn profile?
Here’s why.
An executive recruiter whom I know, once told me that if you’re not on LinkedIn then you don’t exist for him and his competitors.
The primary reason is that he has to do a lot more work to verify your resume to make sure that you’re whom you say you are when you’re not on LinkedIn.
For him, it’s more economical to move onto candidates who are on LinkedIn.
Also, if you’re not on LinkedIn then people ask themselves why not? What’s wrong with you?
So, unless you’re a spectacular one-in-a-million candidate, you’d better be on LinkedIn and you’d better have a complete profile.
Next, more proof!
A recent survey by the resume writing service, ResumeGo, found that job applicants with a comprehensive (meaning complete) LinkedIn profile are 71% more likely to get an interview.
See my point?
The recruiters and the hiring managers are using LinkedIn to make their first cuts on possible candidates.
The more appealing you make yourself and the easier you make their jobs the greater the likelihood that you’ll get called in for an interview.
I’ve heard all the arguments either about being on LinkedIn or having a complete profile:
Don’t have the time.
My name’s out there isn’t that enough?
What? Be out there with everybody else? (Yeah, I actually heard that one!)
I’ll get around to it when I need to. (This one’s my favorite.)
These are not arguments, these are only excuses.
Trust me, I’m telling you this for your own good.
Like it or not, you need a complete LinkedIn profile. (Which also means a current one!)
And, while you’re at it, how about staying engaged on LinkedIn?
Don’t let your LinkedIn profile become your obituary!
That’s it for now!
