An old joke comes to mind whenever I’m asked this question by a prospective client.
A couple are driving in the countryside and are lost.
They stop to ask an old farmer for directions to their destination.
He pauses for a moment and then says, “Well, I wouldn’t start from here.”
Don’t worry, starting on your social media journey is nowhere near as difficult as that couple’s one.
At least, it doesn’t have to be.
Let’s talk about it!
Getting started on social media can be as either as easy or as difficult as you want it to be.
The degree of difficulty has a lot to do with your own discipline and willingness to work at it.
Like anything else in life, the important thing is to just get started!
“Where to begin?” is the question that I get asked all the time.
My answer for those looking to use social media to advance their career or their business is to use LinkedIn.
You go proceed from there at your own pace afterwards.
I have a few reasons:
- Simple to set up
- Allows access to a vetted, professional network
- Free (Don’t go for Premium)
- Allows for the basics of social media
- Engagement with others
- Creating your own content and sharing that of others
- Permits social proof
LinkedIn can serve as your default website until you have one of your own.
Additional social media can be added to LinkedIn as you grow.
You can make your mistakes here! (Trust me, you’ll make them!)
Social media is important to your career and your brand.
You can’t afford not to have it.
So, wherever you are, start from there and begin using social media.
Keep it simple, start slow if necessary, and just at it!
Work in other social media channels that you’re comfortable with as you need them.
And, whatever you do, don’t forget to monitor your progress!
That’s it for now!

Also, never forget to reach out to either ask questions or to ask for help from someone like myself!
