I get the question in the title a lot from new prospects.
Its still frustrating for me after all these years that people misunderstand the benefits of social media and how it works.
Lets talk about this!
The Answer
Before we go any further, let me say this, Social media does help you!
Of course, you have to use it properly and understand what its benefits are if you expect to achieve them.
Social media is not a silver bullet.
Like anything worth doing in life, you have to do it well!
Todays World
The world around is from very different from the one that we left as we sailed into the Twenty-first Century a few short years ago.
Traditional media and business models have been turned on their heads.
Businesses that had been in business since the Nineteenth Century are gone, soon to be forgotten.
Everyone seems to be walking around connected to one another seemingly by the Internet. (Be careful that might get you a ticket soon in NYC!)
Like it or not, the world is moving online and this is only just the beginning.
The Implications
If you want to be found today, you’d better be online.
An executive recruiter, who is a client of mine, told me once that if a prospect sends him a resume and theyre not on LinkedIn then they go to the bottom of the pile? Why? Simple, it’s not worth the effort for my client to validate all the information on a resume that he can quickly do on LinkedIn. A candidate has to be really good and the fee fairly large to make it worth the effort. Then there’s the question, “Why isn’t this person on LinkedIn?” Are they just unfamiliar with the technology or is there something else wrong here?
Traditional advertising is going through a dramatic change. Print media is shutting down. Broadcast media is being diluted by seemingly countless options.
Whats one to do?
On the flip side, there are new opportunities that weren’t here before.
Engaging on social media gives you the opportunity to reach out to many who earlier were attainable.
You can create your own content and establish your bona fides to your audience, your community.
You can begin your conversation online and then take it offline.
You’re available to be seen and interacted with.
Pretty good, huh?
What Has to Be Done?
The work to be done on social media is simple.
Engage, share content, and keep doing it!
Social media doesn’t do it for you. (AIs not that good yet)
You can’t create a presence on social media and then walk away from it expecting something to happen, it wont happen.
You have to stay at it!
To repeat, like it or not, social media is here to stay.
Either get on board or get left behind.
The choice is yours!
That’s it for now!
Also, never forget to reach out to either ask questions or to ask for help from someone like myself!
