The current emergency has sent the whole world online.
Or, has it?
Many people think that just having a LinkedIn profile, a Twitter account or a Facebook page is enough.
I’ve got news for them, it’s not!
Let’s talk about this!
Kevin Costner’s film, A Field of Dreams, is a classic but it’s done a great disservice to the worlds of marketing and social media.
The reason being, “Build it and they will come!” just doesn’t work in today’s crowded media channels.
(That’s if it ever worked at all.)
Great content, a terrific profile are meaningless without promotion.
One of my more popular blogposts asks if your LinkedIn profile is your obituary because if you don’t engage on it then how does anyone know whether you’re alive or dead?
(Think I’m kidding? I’ll bet you know a couple of people on LinkedIn who are dead. You just haven’t thought about it.)
My reason for making this point in these crazy times that we all live in now is that we can’t just be on social media, we have to engage while we’re there.
And we have to engage more than we did before the emergency had us all sheltering in place.
Good content is always important, but, if it’s not promoted then it’s worthless.
Engagement is also about going out and connecting with other people.
Liking, sharing, and commenting on their content.
And, by commenting on their content, I mean adding value and moving the conversation forward.
Your ultimate goals are to demonstrate that you’re a subject matter expert (SME) and to move the conversation offline to either a video session or a phone call.
Right now, if you’re looking for clients or a job in the current economic environment then you have to be proactive online.
Whatever was good enough before all this, is no longer good enough.
There are opportunities out there, you just have to go out and pitch yourself at them.
I realize what I’m saying isn’t easy but, right now, this is all we’ve got.
That’s it for now!
