Lately, whenever I think social media is getting a little boring, it seems that I can always count on Twitter to do something.
Last week was no exception.
Let’s talk about that!
Apparently, Twitter is testing a new feature called Communities.
Communities will allow its users to chat about particular subjects with others who share the same interests.
Supposedly, it’ll be comparable to Facebook Groups, Discord servers, and Reddit subreddits.
All of this is in an apparent effort to raise annual revenues to $7.5 billion by 2023 and increase its user base to 315 million monetizable daily active users.
BTW Those “monetizable daily active users” are folks like you and me.
Which begs the question, why would we do this?
The atomization of social media won’t be successful.
Just look at how many players have tried to challenge LinkedIn and what has it gotten them.
Even Google tried to take on Facebook with its Google+.
Remember that one?
I’ve blogged before about these Hail Mary plays by Twitter to increase profitability but all I ever see is the same old, same old.
What is the “killer app,” to borrow a phrase, that would bring people over to Twitter from Facebook, Discord, and Reddit?
I’m not sure Communities is it.
Yes, Twitter is a useful social media channel, it’s fun to use, although, it has of late gotten more than its fair share of notoriety.
But, cobbling together copycats of other channels’ ideas may not exactly be the way to go.
We haven’t seen a major social media channel go away for quite some time.
(Anyone remember MySpace?)
Maybe Twitter is being teed up for that spot.
That’s it for now!
